Astragalus

Also called: Huang qi, Astragalus membranaceus

A root from traditional Chinese medicine used to strengthen the immune system and support energy. It is usually taken to prevent illness rather than during an acute infection.

Supplements can interact with medications and aren't right for everyone, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with a chronic condition. Ask your provider before you start.

Studied for

  • Immune support, especially through cold season
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Recovery after illness

Found naturally in

  • Astragalus root, traditionally simmered in soups and broths

Label red flags

  • Species not listed (only Astragalus membranaceus is used as medicine; some wild species are toxic)
  • Products marketed for 'anti-aging' with unclear compounds

Check with a provider

  • Autoimmune conditions. Because it stimulates the immune system, ask your provider first.
  • Taking immune-suppressing medicines
  • Taking lithium
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: not well studied
