Triphala

Also called: Amalaki, bibhitaki, and haritaki

An Ayurvedic blend of three dried fruits, traditionally used as a gentle bowel regulator. Small studies suggest it may help constipation.

Supplements can interact with medications and aren't right for everyone, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with a chronic condition. Ask your provider before you start.

Studied for

  • Constipation and regularity
  • General digestion
  • Gum health (as a mouth rinse, some studies)

Found naturally in

  • Amla (Indian gooseberry), one of its three fruits

Label red flags

  • No mention of testing for heavy metals (a known problem with some Ayurvedic products)
  • Doesn't list all three fruits

Check with a provider

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: avoid it
  • Diarrhea, or an active IBD flare (it can loosen stools and cause cramping)
  • Taking diabetes medicine (amalaki may lower blood sugar)
